A few months ago, I did some pro bono shooting for a amateur boxing collaboration.  Even though it really doesn’t fit into my body of work, I like boxing and thought it would be fun.  That was enough for me.

I haven’t really thought much about these images since, and I can’t remember why I decided to revisit them.  I did, though, and I’m glad for that.  I think they’re kind of cool, at least, and that’s really what matters most.

For some time now, I’ve been setting up a simple natural light set whenever the time and place allow it during an average work day.  I have over 30 shots completed to date, and they’re all of co-workers.  I give them zero direction, and the results have been both humorous and effective.

Due to the rainy spring(or something), we had some hangers-on in the area of fall color.  It’s great while it lasts.

I like this shot.  I don’t love it, but I like it just fine.  Cleaning out my computer, I realized just how lucky I was to get it.  Nothing was going as I hoped for this group shot.  My pre-conceived vision fell apart spectacularly, and due to time, the back-up plan was not possible.

This was the very last frame I took that day.

I got the opportunity to shoot Doomtree for some of their own basic PR stuff.  They were younger than I thought they’d be.  That probably speaks more about myself than them.  You mean it’s not still ’88?

Someone once said, and I’m paraphrasing, “The best camera is the one that you always have with you.”  I don’t think I could possibly agree more.

It’s almost embarrassing how much I now like shooting with my phone.  It isn’t just random abstracts anymore,  I’m actually setting up shots.  I’m no longer scouting, I’m thinking about final prints.  Like my Nikon, with nearly every shot I take with my phone, I’m paying attention to lighting quality and ratios, composition, and focus.  Every shot is a RAW that will be reviewed later when I have more time to bring it up to it’s potential.

As others have asserted, this makes me both excited and scared.

While going through a storage closet at my parents house 8 years ago, I came across, of all things, a patterned lime green and white leisure suit.  Since my dad is about 4 inches shorter than me, surely it would be too small.

Actually, it ended up being one of the best fitting pieces of clothing I own.  My dad relinquished it without a fight.  I’m sure he thought it better to sit unworn in my closet than in his own.  Neither of us, though, knew the milage that was going to consistently be put on this wonderful suit over the next 7+ years.  Though I’ve broken it out randomly on numerous occasions, as has a good friend of mine, Easter is when it really shines.  This was taken on it’s 7th Easter of the last 8.

Just like the previous post, I’ve looked at this light a hundred times before.  Today it mouthed off to me so I shot it.

This building is a perfect example of why, no matter how lackadaisical I sometimes get, interesting subjects are out there.  Everywhere.

I’ve probably passed this building 200+ times over the years.  I guess I just haven’t ever really looked at it.  I mean, really looked at it.  Maybe it’s not my favorite period, as far as architecture goes.  You know what, though, so what.  At least it’s different, considering today’s standards.  At least it isn’t another beige brick littering the landscape.  I’m going to have to go back and redo this with my camera.  It’s frightening and exciting that I took this on my phone.

Too many inhabitants of this city(including the author) fail to take advantage of some of that which the city is in a unique position to offer.  The lakes and rivers are the most obvious example, followed by the tree-laden parks of this forest city.  In the last few years, I’ve been putting a little more effort than usual to try and enjoy these offerings, and it’s been a lot of fun.

This is the lock system in front of St. Anthony Main.  For the next week or so, you can stand over this system with a coffee in your hand and watch the 2nd largest river in the world at its most violent time of the year.  With the sheer amount of snow we’ve had this year, it would be a shame to not witness it.
